1. AI crawlers can't read your website
AI engines send their own crawlers — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended. Many websites block them in robots.txt without knowing it, or render all their content with JavaScript, which most AI crawlers don't execute. To an AI engine, that website is an empty page.
How to check: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow: / under any AI user-agent. Then view your page source (Ctrl+U) — if your services and prices aren't in the raw HTML, crawlers can't see them either.
2. There's no machine-readable identity
Structured data (JSON-LD schema) is your business's identity card for machines. Without Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema, AI can't confidently confirm who you are, what you do, and where you serve — so it recommends a competitor it can verify.
How to fix: add LocalBusiness schema with your exact name, address, phone, opening hours and service area, and keep those details identical on your Google Business Profile and directory listings.
3. Bing doesn't know you exist
ChatGPT's web answers draw heavily on Bing's index. Most businesses focus on Google and never register with Bing Webmaster Tools — which means they're invisible exactly where ChatGPT looks first.
How to fix: verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (you can import directly from Google Search Console) and submit your sitemap. It takes about ten minutes.
